Johnstown Christian Preschool

in association with the Johnstown Presbyterian Church

The Johnstown Christian Preschool is a ministry that endeavors to love with Christ’s perfect love. We care for the welfare of each child by encouraging spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental growth through education, and we demonstrate the compassion of Christ in our teaching.

Johnstown Christian Preschool uses a solid educational curriculum, which is taught in a Christian setting and context by committed Christian teachers. Our teachers carry the message of Christ always—from the classroom to the reinforcing events and activities of the preschool. Our mission is to prepare each preschooler to enter the mainstream public educational system with Christ as their companion.

At Johnstown Christian Preschool we work closely with local school districts to ensure the children are ready for kindergarten socially, emotionally, and physically. Our curriculum is one of a kind and developed with key early childhood milestones in mind. Our daily schedule allows for social play where the children can pick from different stations during free and dramatic play to expand their imaginations and their social skills with their peers. During our class time, we focus on relevant and themed lesson units throughout the school year. The students are given one-on-one and small group attention during our daily stations. Each day during station time we focus on literacy: learning letters, their sounds, sight words, and oral language development exercises to strengthen their language skills. Math units focus on counting, number recognition, patterning, shape recognition, measuring, and much more. We use our science time to expand on developing cognitive and problem-solving skills. We use hands-on lessons for the children to explore all areas of science including engineering, chemistry, life science, and more. All of our lessons and practices are led with Christ at the center of our hearts with the intent of helping the children learn and grow in His love.

 Play

Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.
— Mr. Rogers

We believe play is the foundation of all skills that children are developing. Johnstown Christian Preschool uses play in all facets of our learning. During the day we will implement games that enhance our lessons such as memory games, identification games, Bingo for shape, letter, word and number recognition. Playdough, manipulatives, and toys are used to build fine motor and cognitive skills. Each day we have craft and art time. During this time, we will have either a structured craft or open-ended art project for the children to participate in. A lot of times you will find our children completing these crafts while listening to classical music, popular music from children’s movies, or while carrying on conversations with their peers. Children also have structured and unstructured play times throughout the day. We find that children flourish when given the opportunity to learn and grown through play both independently and with their peers.

 Grow

Character development and social skills are important to help develop a child’s natural desire to learn. We understand that each child has a unique set of traits that will help lay the path for their future education. Our teacher to student ratio allows for us to get to know each child individually. From there, we are able to recognize their personal skills, desires, and abilities and tailor our teaching in small groups and one-on-one sessions to make them the best they can be. We prayerfully try to nourish each child’s unique abilities to help them be successful academically, socially, and spiritually. With Christ as the center of our organization we lead with His example to ensure children leave here each day filled with His love and feeling like they have worked to the best of their abilities.

Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.
— Proverbs 22:6
